On Jul. 31, 2000, Genome British Columbia was founded as one of six Genome Canada centres across the country. Genome Canada is the primary funding and information resource related to genomics and proteomics in Canada.

Genome BC is supported by the Province of British Columbia, the Government of Canada through Genome Canada and Western Economic Diversification Canada and more than 300 international public and private co-funding partners.

Genome BC has funded more than 30 collaborative health projects. Many are focused on developing new genomics-enabled diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic tools—the foundation for personalized medicine. Tailored to the individual, genomic-based medical technologies will ensure that patients receive the right treatment at the right time, saving lives and contributing to the economic sustainability of the health care system
