On Jul. 7, 2011 the Maine Institute for Human Genetics and Health announced that it would cease operations due to increased competition for government research funding and private industry investment, in combination with the Great Recession and general budget-tightening for hospitals and health care systems.

The Institute, established in 2005, was a collaboration between Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems, Jackson Laboratory, and the University of Maine.
