On Jul. 13, 2014, leaders of The Fraternal Order of Eagles, the University of Iowa and the University of Iowa Foundation announced a $25 million gift commitment from the Eagles to fund diabetes research at the UI.

Every dollar donated by the Eagles is benefiting research taking place within the DRC.

  • An $8 million endowment to create four endowed chairs
  • A $2 million endowment to support two faculty fellowships
  • A $5 million endowment to fund innovative diabetes research programs.
  • A $10 million non-endowed fund to recruit leaders in diabetes science and translational medicine.

The Diabetes Research Center, which opened Aug. 23, 2014, occupies 2 floors (20,000+ sq. ft.) within the John and Mary Pappajohn Biomedical Discovery Building. A team of 100 researchers works daily conducting a variety of research studies centered around maintaining, preventing and, ultimately, curing diabetes.
