Cancer stem cells were first identified in acute myelogenous leukemia
In 1997, cancer stem cells were first identified in acute myelogenous leukemia. They will later be identified in additional cancer types, including cancers that form solid tumors.
Cancer stem cells are rare cells that have the ability to proliferate extensively and initiate cancer when injected into animals. Cancer stem cells in solid tumors are the only tumor cells that have the ability to initiate new tumors.
