In 1943, Leo Kanner, a child psychiatrist at Johns Hopkins University, published the first clinical description of 11 children with autism. He identified ﾓthe childrenﾒs inability to relate themselves in the ordinary way to people and situations from the beginning of lifeﾔ as the primary characteristic of this new syndrome.
