In 1913, the first known article on cancer’s warning signs was published in the popular women’s magazine (Ladies’ Home Journal). Although cancer research was becoming more of a priority, cancer prevention research was still not recognized as very important.
The idea that dietary changes, such as less meat and reduction of alcohol consumption, could prevent cancer was favored by some. For much of the 20th century, cancer prevention was not viewed separately from the practice of early detection and treatment.
