In 1956, the University of California Radiation Laboratory, now known as the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) acquired the IBM 704 and its successor the 709 (with built-in floating point and magnetic core memory, 8000ﾗeventually 32,000ﾗwords of it) were developed in part because of the Labratory’s encouragement, and they carried Livermore almost to the end of its first decade. The Lab had acquired the Univac-1 and the IBM 701 in 1953ﾗthe beginning of the Laboratory’s links to commercial supercomputing.
