In Jan. 1999, the Carbone Cancer Center and McArdle Laboratories merged and began to function as a single center under the new administrative alignment. Eight new programs strongly endorsed by external advisors also began to replace the activities of the existing programs.

The University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center received National Cancer Center designation in 1973.
