In 541, an outbreak of bubonic plague (yersina pestis), a bacterial disease later named the Black Plague or the Black Death, had begun. The outbreak claimed an estimated 30 and 50 million people — half of Europe’s population by 544. That plague became known as the Justinian Plague.
