New York had reached 4,000 influenza cases, with 700 being schoolchildrenᅠ

By Oct. 4, 1918, physicians reported 999 new influenza cases for the previous 24-hour period, bringing the total number of cases since the start of the epidemic to approximately 4,000.

Nearly 700 of those cases were among the city’s schoolchildren. The Brownsville section of Brooklyn was particularly hard hit, and all of the borough’s hospitals were overcrowded.
