On Oct. 25, 2024, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported illnesses have been reported in thirteen states with 12 more people hospitalized, bringing the total to 22. This number included the previously reported death in Colorado and child with complications of hemolytic uremic syndrome, or HUS, and 1 new HUS in an adult.

The most recent illness started on October 10. Taylor Farms initiated a voluntary recall of some onions sent to food service operators. Due to the product actions taken by both companies, the CDC believes the risk to the public is very low.

McDonald’s stores in Colorado, Kansas, Utah, Wyoming, and portions of Idaho, Iowa, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, and Oklahoma temporarily stopped using their current supply of Quarter Pounder slivered onions and beef patties.
