In 1987, Livermore biomedical researchers began studying human chromosome 19. At the same time, Los Alamos began efforts on chromosome 16 and Lawrence Berkeley was considering working on chromosome 5.
With its Human Genome Initiative, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) became the first federal agency to begin decoding the human genome.
