In Nov. 1973, Dixy Lee Ray, Chairperson of the Atomic Energy Commission, visited Livermore. Ray, an american scientist and politician who served as the 17th Governor of the Washington, learned about the work of her former student, Florence Harrison, a biologist at the Laboratory. Harrison was a role model for numerous women scientists.
