On Oct. 25, 1918, at the direction of the health department, Detroit teachers began training to volunteer to help assist healthcare workers to fight influenza.

Male teachers were tasked with clerical duty at the department of health and at the schools, while female teachers were instructed on how to conduct home visits, how to report their findings, and how to best educate families on proper influenza care.
