On Nov. 21, 2008, the Washington State Academy of Sciences (WSAS) was launched. Authorized by the state legislature in 2005, the WSAS is an organization of outstanding Washington scientists dedicated to serving the state with scientific counsel.

The Washington group is modeled after the National Academy of Sciences, established in 1863 by President Lincoln.
