OHSU became the first in Oregon to offer a new artificial disk for the neck
On Aug. 16, 2007, surgeons at Oregon Health and Science University announced implanting a new artificial disc in the first Oregon patient since the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the device. The Prestige Disc is for the cervical spine.
The patient is 47-year-old Todd Trenaman, of Warren. He is a commercial construction plumber and married father of two. He suffered neck injuries playing ice hockey that affected a nerve leading to his arms. He hopes the surgery will relieve the pain in his shoulder and neck so he can carry his young daughters.
The surgeon — Johnny Delashaw — is a professor of neurological surgery, and head and neck surgery. He is the first in Oregon to implant the Prestige Cervical Disc during an early study. He is the only Oregon surgeon now implanting the disc and will train other surgeons on the procedure.
