On Jan. 9, 2007, the Executive Committee of the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists approved an interim position statement, adding novel influenza A virus infections to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS).

The addition of this infection to NNDSS was expected to facilitate the timely identification and confirmation of cases to CDC, and early initiation of appropriate health responses to human infections with novel influenza A viruses that might have pandemic potential.
