Pacific Northwest Research Institute led consortium that conducted first human islet transplantation in Puget Sound region
On Jul. 30, 2002, Dr. R. Paul Robertson, President and Scientific Director at the Pacific Northwest Research Foundation led a research consortium that conducted the first human islet transplantation in the Puget Sound region.
Three patients with type 1 diabetes received the transplanted islets, enabling them to produce their own insulin for the first time in decades. Such success helped confirm islet transplantation as a potential long-term cure for diabetes.
