In 2000, the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute (VBI), later known as the Biocomplexity Institute of Virginia Tech, opened its doors. The research institute specialized in bioinformatics, computational biology, and systems biology.

The Biocomplexity Institute was absorbed into the Fralin Institute of Life Sciences at Virginia Tech in 2019.
