On Nov. 4, 1997, Vice President Al Gore and Senator Mark O. Hatfield attended groundbreaking ceremonies for the Mark O. Hatfield Clinical Research Center, designed to include a new hospital and research laboratories.

The Mark O. Hatfield Research Center, located in Bethesda, Maryland, was dedicated in 1998. The center houses a variety of basic and clinical research programs that have the potential to spark new therapies.
