In 1996, food poisoning in the U.S. cost an estimated $22 billion, according to a congressional study. In July 1995, FoodNet was created, a collaborative effort by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and selected state health departments.

FoodNet conducts active surveillance for seven bacterial and two parasitic foodborne diseases within a defined population of 20.5 million Americans.
