On Jul. 31, 1996, the diphtheria and tetanus toxoids and acellular pertussis vaccine adsorbed (Tripedia by Aventis Pasteur) was licensed for primary and booster immunization of infants.

Whole cell pertussis vaccines developed from suspensions of whole killed organisms were first licensed in the U.S. in 1914. In 1948, the pertussis vaccine was combined with diphtheria and tetanus toxoids and became a diphtheria whole cell pertussis and tetanus toxoid (DTP) vaccine.
