University of California, San Francisco performed the first succesful fetal surgery

On May 10, 1981, University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) performed the first successful fetal surgery, correcting a birth defect while still in mother’s womb.

Michael Skinner, the first baby in the world to survive successful fetal surgery, was born at the UCSF Medical Center on Mother’s Day.
