In March 1968, a reorganization of federal health programs placed the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the Public Health Service. Later in the year, the FDA was placed under the umbrella agency designed to coordinate environmental responsibilities in the government, the Consumer Protection and Environmental Health Service.
