In 1950, Michael E. DeBakey, M.D. was recruited by Baylor College of Medicine in Houston as its new Chairman of Surgery. DeBakey, a renown heart surgeon, served as Chairman of the Department of Surgery until 1993, was president of the college from 1969 to 1979, and served as Chancellor from 1979 to January 1996
