In 1950, Earl Stadtman of the NIH discovered phosphotransacetylose, elucidating the role of acetyl CoA in fatty acid metabolism. In a series of papers published in the JBC Stadtman and Barker used the enzyme extracts to study the individual reactions involved in fatty acid synthesis and confirmed that ethanol is oxidized to acetyl phosphate, which condenses with acetate and forms butyric acid.
