World’s first succesful surgical lung removal was performed at Washington University – St Louis
On Apr. 4, 1933, Evarts A. Graham, MD at Washington University – St. Louis performed the world’s first successful surgical lung removal from 48-year-old James Lee Gilmore, an obstetrician-gynecologist had carcinoma lung.
Radon seeds were implanted in the stump for brachytherapy. Horrified by the remaining defect, a third to ninth rib thoracoplasty was performed, similar to that done for tuberculosis patients at the time. Gilmore was discharged 75 days later after a stormy postoperative course, operated twice for an abscess and then re-thoracoplasty. This case report was published in Journal of American Medical Association.
