November proclaimed National Sarcoidosis Awareness Month in Chicago

In 1998, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Dale proclaimed November “National Sarcoidosis Awareness Month” in Chicago. The National Sarcoidosis Society was founded in 1995 in Chicago by Ms Glenda Fulton, a 33 year old survivor of the disease known as Sarcoidosis, because of a lack of educational awareness and information abput the disease. Difficult to diagnose, most scientists believe sarcoidosis is a disorder of the immune system, with some people vulnerable to getting the disease while the majority of the population remains healthy and unaffected. As much as ninety percent of Sarcoidosis cases are initially found in the lungs. However, Sarcoidosis can also occur in other organs of the body at the same time or later in the disease course.
