Detroit Health Commissioner prohibited soldiers and sailors from entering Detroit to curb spread of influenza
On Oct. 17, 1918, Detroit Health Commissioner James Inches prohibited soldiers and sailors from entering Detroit, to try to curb the spread of influenza who believed was responsible for bringing influenza to Detroit.
Later that day, the state Board of Health and Governor Albert Sleeper issued a sweeping order closing all places of public amusement and congregation – with the exception of the schools.
