Large Philadelphia parade of 200,000 people led to large spike in influenza cases
On Sept. 28, 1918, Philadelphia participated in a large parade of about 200,000 people, which led to a large spike in influenza cases.
Within a few days of the parade, Philadelphia was rocked by a massive spike in the number of influenza cases. Hospital beds quickly filled, and the city’s physicians and nurses were overwhelmed by the surge. Still, city officials hesitated to take decisive action.
