In 1902, Charles Wardell Stiles identified the hookworm as the cause of anemia in the southern U.S. Although this discovery was made a few months before he joined the Hygienic Laboratory, his subsequent work on hookworm over the next two decades helped to eliminate it as a problem in the South.
