The Medical College of the State of South Carolina established training school for African-American nurses
In Jul. 1897, the Medical College of the State of South Carolina (MCSSC) Hospital and Training School for Nurses was established for the education of African-American nurses. The school opened its doors later that year in a three-story brick building located at 135 Cannon Street in Charleston.
The ‘Cannon Street Hospital’ provided desperately needed health care for African-American citizens with twenty-four beds, nurses’ dormitories, a dining hall, an operating room, a reception room and an office.
