On Sept. 16, 2026, The Lost Funds Project, a comprehensive resource tracking federal funding disruptions and their impacts in each state, and how states are fighting back was released. To date, the Trump administration has disrupted the work of 3,494 local governments, 753 school districts, 437 businesses, and 15,424 other recipients.

California was hit the hardest with $2 billion in lost Medicaid payments; $133 million in disrupted emergency planning funding; and $74 million in delayed funding for combating wildfires in rural communities.

The data follows funding cuts and slowdowns under the Trump administration that began in 2025, tracking financial losses across the country. With attention to states, programs, and sectors, the Project team update the data with relevant press coverage, affected recipients, and active litigation, including restorations of funding to states pushing back in the courts. The data is free to use and available to download as CSV files.

The team constantly monitor developments in federal funding and enhance the data with new impact areas, litigation details, and press coverage on a biweekly basis. They rely on financial transaction data from USAspending, which is updated approximately once a month.

The primary source for grant award amounts is USAspending. Litigation information is pulled directly from court documents available via CourtListener. Expected funding figures are drawn from the strongest evidence available. Agency award announcements are relied upon, along with agency budgets, Congressional appropriations, and historical trends. If only national funding levels for an impact are available, states’ estimates and expected shares using historical spending are used when possible, supplemented by program-specific allocation factors like population or highway miles.
