In 1973, UChicago established the University of Chicago Comprehensive Cancer Center (UCCCC), receiving its initial designation as a “Clinical Cancer Center” from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) that same year. It was later designated as a “Comprehensive Cancer Center” in 2008.

The UCCCC is one of only two NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in Illinois and has earned a reputation for excellence, innovation, and a commitment to addressing cancer from every angle.

Seminal discoveries made at UChicago have stimulated the development and introduction of many of the cancer treatments used today. Many of the roots of chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, gene therapy, and bone marrow transplantation can be traced to UChicago
