The University of California, San Diego department of biology was founded

In 1960, the University of California, San Diego department of biology was officially founded. The department was later renamed the Division of Biological Sciences. The UCSD campus was realized through state appropriations, a donation from General Dynamics and a gift from the city of 63 acres of pueblo land northeast of Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
