In 1989, the University of California, Irvine (UCI) Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center (CFCCC) was founded as a university-based cancer center.  It is the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center in Orange County.

The UCI Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center (CFCCC) gained Comprehensive Cancer Center status from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in 1994.
