In 1977, Stanford Research Institute changed its name to SRI International. Stanford Research Institute, now known as the SRI International (SRI) was founded in 1946 by the trustees of Stanford University following several decades of cooperation between members of the Stanford community and local business executives.

Stanford Research Institute became independent of Stanford University in 1970.
