In 1966, the American Chemical Society awarded the Priestley Medal to William Oliver Baker “to recognize distinguished services to chemistry,” the Society’s most prestigious award.

Baker was president of Bell Labs from 1973 to 1979 and advisor on scientific matters to five United States presidents.
