On Sept. 4, 2003, the National Center for Research Resources (NCCR) awarded a $6.7 million grant to the University of Georgia (UGA) for a Parkinson’s disease study and cancer research. It was co-funded by the National Cancer Institute.

The technology allowed the glycomic analysis of small numbers of cells and the means to isolate or kill these particular cells. The expected outcome will be applicable to the isolation of certain types of nerve cells for treatment of such diseases as Parkinson’s, as well as development of new ways to diagnose and treat cancer.
