On Nov. 2, 2009, an international consortium lead by Larry Schook at the University of Illinois in Champaign announced that they had sequenced the genome of a red-haired Duroc pig.

The draft sequence, which was about 98 per cent complete, allowed researchers to pinpoint genes that are useful to pork production or are involved in immunity or other important physiological processes in the pig.
