In 1911, Swiss psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler coined the term ‘autism,’ borrowing from the Eugen Bleuler Greek word ‘autos’ (meaning self) to suggest a state of ‘detachment from reality, together with the relative and absolute predominance of the inner life.’
