In 2011, the Pacific Northwest Diabetes Research Institute began clinical trials on antioxidant drug treatments on volunteers from Madigan Army Medical and and members from the Snoqualmie Tribe.

The study concluded there was not any established benefit for antioxidants use in the management of diabetic complications. Therefore, routine vitamin or mineral supplementation is not generally recommended.
