In 1942, Lloyd Felton, utilizing pneumoccal polysaccharides, demonstrated a phenomenon known as “immunological paralysis” or immune tolerance. Felton coined the phrase “immunological paralysis” in reference to the inability of pneumococcal polysaccharide to elicit antibody responses in mice.
