“Earth is a Rock, Let the DNA Mold me” rewritten hit Rock n’ Roll Song Celebrating ‘Science’ released
On Mar. 3, 2025, LifeScienceHistory.com announced the release of “Earth is a Rock, Let the DNA Mold Me” — a rewritten hit rock n’ roll song and music video celebrating science, and scientists everywhere.
Earth is a Rock celebrates life science and related sciences from astronomy, genetics and geology to computing, medicine and telecommunications. The song recognizes over 100 notable scientists, more than thirty Nobel laureates, industry leaders, movie stars, companies, medical, scientific and computing terms and more.
The song is a remake of Life is a Rock, But the Radio Rolled Me released in 1974, written by the late Norman Dolph and Paul DiFranco. The song was recorded by an ad hoc studio band called Reunion. The original song was No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and No. 33 on the UK Singles Chart.
Norman Dolph is most known for producing the first recordings of the rock band the Velvet Underground while a sales executive at Columbia Records. Dolph ran one of America’s first mobile discos in New York, where he often played nighttime events. Through these gigs, he met the iconic visual artist Andy Warhol, who introduced Dolph to a then-unknown band he later managed called The Velvet Underground that included Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison, Moe Tucker and Nico. Dolph received an original painting from Andy Warhol in payment for his work.
David Bowie said “The Velvet Underground didn’t sell many records but they influenced more musicians than any other artists including The Beatles.” Musician and songwriter Brian Eno famously said that while only a few people bought their records, “everyone who did started a band.” In 2004, the Velvet Underground were ranked number 19 on Rolling Stone‘s list of the “100 Greatest Artists of All Time”. Following Reed’s death in 2013, the group received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017.
Paul DiFranco is Distinguished Adjunct Assistant Professor, Music Production & Recording Technology, Film Studies at Shenandoah University, and an in demand music supervisor. DiFranco is known for Raven’s Ridge (1999), New Nightmare (1994) and Soul Surfer (2011).
Earth is a Rock is written by Dolph, DiFranco and Phil Ness, owner and publisher of LifeScienceHistory.com and co-produced by T.J. Maher and Paul DiFranco.
