In 1928, Dr. Eaton MacKay was invited from Stanford University to become the first director of research at the Scripps Metabolic Clinic.

Ellen Browning Scripps established the 57-bed Scripps Memorial Hospital and Scripps Metabolic Clinic on Prospect Street in La Jolla, opening to patients on Sept. 17, 1924.
