Diet drug fen-phen was taken off the market

On Sept. 15, 1997, Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories and Interneuron Pharmaceuticals, manufacturers of the popular off-label obesity combination therapy known as fen-phen, agreed to a voluntary withdrawal.

Reports demonstrated a large proportion of patients taking these drugs exhibited abnormal echocardiograms, which could indicate adverse effects on the heart οΎ— even though they lacked other symptoms.
