In 1962, biochemist Frank Huennekens joined the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation from the University of Washington Medical School to head the Biochemistry Division. Three years later, microbiologist John Spizizen arrived from the University of Minnesota to establish a Division of Microbiology.
