Yellow fever killed 1,200 people in Baltimore
In 1800, a yellow fever outbreak killed 1,200 people in Baltimore. The presence of an abundance of mosquito-breeding wetlands in the environs and a generally warm climate led to a number of Yellow Fever Epidemics at the turn of the nineteenth century – and the decision to construct a public hospital was clearly partially related to this circumstance.
