William Halsted performed the first radical mastectomy
In 1882, William Halsted performed the surgery that bears his name, and the modern era in the surgical treatment of breast cancer.
Since then there have been attempts to expand the scale of the intervention, but these operations, called supraradical mastectomies were associated with significant morbidity and proved to be of little therapeutic benefit.
