US marine hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana was authorized by Congress
In 1802, a U.S. marine hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana was authorized by Congress while the port was still under French rule. The Louisiana Purchase was one year later.
The marine hospitals were first established in the port cities along the East Coast, and later along the inland waterways and the Great Lakes The major function of the Marine Hospital Service was the care of sick seamen. In 1878 its functions were expanded greatly.
